Sustainable packaging: not a buzzword, but a reality

The new European PPWR regulation is putting sustainable packaging high on the agenda. Discover what this regulation means and how Sanderus is already investing in sustainable packaging solutions.

Since February 2025, new European legislation on sustainable packaging has been in force: the EU Packaging & Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR). This legislation aims to make the packaging industry more sustainable and transparent.

What does the new European PPWR regulation entail?

The PPWR regulation introduces clear obligations for packaging producers and processors, including:
- all packaging must be fully recyclable by 2030
- minimum percentages of recycled material must be present in packaging
- clear documentation on the origin of raw materials
- restrictions on the use of harmful substances, such as PFAS and mineral oils
- Member States must reduce packaging waste per capita

Our sustainable approach at Sanderus

At Sanderus, we have been consciously choosing sustainable printing for many years, which means we are already well aligned with these requirements. Sustainability is an integral part of our production process.

Raw materials: recycled and responsibly sourced
- We use only certified EU board (FSC, PEFC, …).
- We print exclusively with vegetable-based inks.
- Our packaging is finished with water-based adhesives and dispersion coatings instead of UV varnish.
- Thanks to the use of reverse osmosis water, we limit the use of additives and chemicals, ensuring that our wastewater is not harmful to the environment.

Production process: chemical-free and environmentally friendly
- Our printing plates are completely chemical-free and recyclable.
- We clean our machines and ink rollers using reusable cleaning cloths that are washed in an environmentally friendly way.
- We keep paper and board waste to a minimum and recycle it.
