OVAM, together with Comeos, VIL, Fevia Vlaanderen and Detic, is one of the initiators of the Green Deal on packaging. This is a voluntary agreement between the Flemish government and companies to reduce the amount of single-use packaging. Together with parties across the distribution chain, we want to gather knowledge, investigate systems and supervise projects with the aim of “packaging differently”. We do this by focusing on prevention (eliminating packaging), but also on reusing packaging. Packaging is important, just think of transport, food loss, storage, and so on. However, not all packaging is equally necessary. The Green Deal on packaging focuses on the sustainable use of raw materials and therefore shifts the objective from collection and recycling to a real change in distribution and consumption models.
